Artist’s reconstruction of Sculptor Galaxy

A spiral woven from dust and stars.

Seen at a steep angle, NGC 253 stretches into a mottled ribbon of starlight, dark dust and intense central star formation.

Research-informed artistic reconstruction. Shape, colour and viewing angle are illustrative.

NGC 253 · The Sculptor Galaxy

This route adopts the rounded 11-million-light-year distance in ESO’s 2025 Sculptor Galaxy overview. Published estimates differ; older ESO material uses 13 million light-years. The map is an approximate distance guide.

The moving dashes represent light travelling between galaxies. Their speed and the spacing of the galaxy icons are illustrative.

≈ 70,000 light-years across.

The size instrument uses the rounded 70,000-light-year stellar extent in ESO’s wide-field image description. This older reference is illustrative rather than an exact boundary; inferred physical size also depends on the adopted distance.

The overview compares this galaxy with a rounded Milky Way reference of 100,000 light-years on one linear scale. These luminous extents do not represent sharp physical edges.

A dusty disk, a busy centre

A highly inclined spiral disk hides much of its central activity behind dust. A vigorous central starburst creates young stars within this dense environment. The model separates the broad structural components; it does not map individual dust clouds or the observed viewing angle.

Select Halo, Disk or Bulge to highlight each component. This is a schematic model, not a reconstruction of exact proportions. Animation speed is not a physical rotation rate.

Beyond the Local Group

NGC 253 lies in the direction of Sculptor, well beyond the Local Group. It is the large spiral commonly called the Sculptor Galaxy, not the much closer Sculptor dwarf spheroidal satellite of the Milky Way. The connecting line below compares its distance from us.
