Two sweeping arms and a smaller golden companion make M51 an iconic portrait of galactic interaction.

M51 · With companion NGC 5195

The route uses the rounded 31-million-light-year distance in NASA’s Hubble Messier catalog. M51 appears in Canes Venatici. The displayed travel time is an approximate light-travel interval from the system to us.

The moving dashes represent light travelling between galaxies. Their speed and the spacing of the galaxy icons are illustrative.

≈ 60,000 light-years across.

The reference diameter is about 60,000 light-years for the main spiral, NGC 5194, following NASA’s Hubble Remix description. It excludes the companion NGC 5195 and is not the full span of the interacting pair.

The overview compares this galaxy with a rounded Milky Way reference of 100,000 light-years on one linear scale. These luminous extents do not represent sharp physical edges.

Spiral arms shaped by a neighbor

Bright young stars, gas and dust trace two prominent arms. The smaller companion NGC 5195 interacts gravitationally with the spiral. The layer model describes the main galaxy, while the image studies include its companion.

Select Halo, Disk or Bulge to highlight each component. This is a schematic model, not a reconstruction of exact proportions. Animation speed is not a physical rotation rate.

Two galaxies, one encounter

NGC 5194 and NGC 5195 form the famous Whirlpool pair. Gravity distorts their structures and affects the gas where new stars form. Their apparent connection in an image is a projected view, not a precise three-dimensional orbit.
